October 11, 2026

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois State Police (ISP) experienced two Move Over Law-related crashes during the past three days on Illinois interstates.

On October 8, 2026, at approximately 11:49 p.m., an ISP Trooper was stationary in a construction zone on Interstate 55 northbound near milepost 106.5, with emergency lights activated. A black Mazda traveling northbound on I-55 struck the ISP squad car. The Trooper was inside of the squad car at the time of the crash and was transported to the hospital by another Trooper as a precaution. The driver of the Mazda, 43-year-old Tiffany Sipes of Williamsville, IL, was issued citations for Scott’s Law and Driving Under the Influence.

On October 9, 2026, at approximately 5:02 p.m., an ISP Trooper was stationary on Interstate 70 westbound near milepost 85.5, with emergency lights activated and working an active crash scene. A black Land Rover traveling westbound on I-70 sideswiped the Trooper’s squad car and struck another vehicle in the backed-up traffic. The Trooper was outside the squad car and no injuries were reported. The driver of the Land Rover, Amanda S. Thomas, 45, of Logan, IL, was issued citations for Scott’s Law, Improper Lane Usage, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident, Driving Under the Influence, and multiple other traffic offenses.

So far in 2026, ISP has suffered 12 Move Over Law-related crashes, resulting in two injured Troopers. In 2025, ISP reported 15 Move Over Law-related crashes with seven Troopers injured. In 2024, ISP had 27 Move Over Law-related crashes with 12 injuries and one death. ISP reminds the public that the Move Over Law, also known as “Scott’s Law” in Illinois, requires all drivers to slow down and move over when approaching an emergency vehicle, emergency worker, or any vehicle with its emergency or hazard lights activated.

A person who violates the Move Over Law faces a fine of no less than $250 and no more than $10,000 for a first offense. If the violation results in injury to another person, the violator’s driver’s license will be revoked.
