ROCK ISLAND COUNTY INTEGRITY TASK FORCE INVESTIGATES OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 7, 2025

ROCK ISLAND – On Sunday, January 5, 2025, the Rock Island Police Department (RIPD) requested the Rock Island County Integrity Task Force (RICITF) investigate an officer involved shooting that occurred near 12th Street and 24th Avenue in Rock Island.

At approximately 3:20 p.m. on January 5, 2025, a RIPD officer attempted to stop a vehicle, which made several attempts to elude the officer. The driver, later identified as 22-year-old Jakarta A. Jackson of East Moline, IL, who had an active warrant for his arrest, eventually stopped his vehicle and ran from the officer. Jackson circled back, got into the vehicle, and attempted to drive away. The RIPD officer opened the driver’s door to detain Jackson, but was subsequently dragged. As the suspect continued to try to flee, the officer fired his gun, striking Jackson. Officers immediately called for emergency medical services and rendered aide until they arrived. Jackson was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The RIPD officer was transported to a local hospital and was treated and released.

RICITF continues to investigate the incident, including reviewing video from in-car and body worn cameras. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Rock Island County State’s Attorney’s Office, which will make a final determination. A thorough investigation can take time and premature release of the video or other information without consultation with and authorization from the State’s Attorney’s Office could compromise the case.

If anyone has information about this incident and has not yet spoken with RICITF investigators, please call RICITF at 309-752-4915, extension 4935.
