“Out of high school, I joined the military and served my country for five years on active duty. As an ISP Trooper, I have had the honor of serving my community for over 20 years. I have noticed a lot of similarities between the military and the ISP. The camaraderie I have with my coworkers, the pride in wearing the uniform, and the satisfaction I feel from doing my job. Being a Trooper allows me to be a steward of my community. Every day, I get to help people, and I get to keep them safe. I can’t do that alone. I am one person. But with all of us working as a team, we can make a difference.” – ISP Acting Academy Commander Richard Morris.

Interested candidates with a military background are eligible to apply as ISP Troopers under Option Two, which allows applicants to bypass the college credits requirements if the applicant meets one of the following criteria:

  • Honorably discharged AND awarded at least one of the qualifying medals by the U.S. Armed Forces (USAF).
  • An active member of the Illinois National Guard or a reserve in the USAF AND been awarded at least one of the qualifying medals as a result of honorable service during deployment on active duty.
  • Honorably discharged AND served in a combat mission by proof of hostile fire pay or imminent danger pay during deployment on active duty.
  • Three years of full active and continuous USAF duty AND received an honorable discharge.
