CHICAGO-
An Illinois State Police (ISP) squad car was damaged on Illinois 53 when it was struck by another vehicle during a motorist assist.
On February 8, 2026, at approximately 3:46 a.m., an ISP Trooper was pulled over on the right shoulder of Illinois 53 northbound at Algonquin Road with their emergency lights activated assisting with a stranded motorist. A black Dodge Ram pickup failed to slow down and struck the rear driver’s side of the stationary squad with the front right of the pickup. The Dodge then struck the driver’s side of the vehicle in front of the squad. The Dodge continued northbound on IL 53 for approximately 200 hundred yards before stopping due to damage sustained in the crash. The driver of the Dodge then fled the scene. The Trooper and driver of the other victim vehicle were outside of their vehicles at the time of the crash. No injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.

A person who violates the Move Over Law faces a fine of no less than $250 and no more than $10,000 for a first offense. If the violation results in injury to another person, the violator’s driver’s license will be suspended for a mandatory period of anywhere between six months and two years.
