MATTOON – The Illinois State Police (ISP) is releasing video after the Mattoon Police Department (MPD) requested the ISP Division of Criminal Investigation to investigate a shooting.
On February 13, 2026, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety in Michigan notified the Mattoon Police Department (MPD) that a suspect wanted in connection with an armed robbery it was investigating was believed to be at hotel in the 1400 block of East Broadway Avenue in Mattoon. At approximately 7:36 a.m., MPD officers responded and located the suspect, 38-year-old De’von M. Coleman-Canady of Kalamazoo, MI, seated inside of a vehicle in the parking lot. MPD officers attempted to have Coleman-Canady exit the vehicle. Coleman-Canady told officers he intended to shoot himself. Moments later, Coleman-Canady fired his weapon and officers found him suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot. No officers discharged their firearm during the encounter. Coleman-Canady was transported to an area hospital and pronounced deceased.
In accordance with ISP’s commitment to integrity and public transparency, the video of the event is being made available to the public and can be found by clicking HERE. This video is being released after consultation with the Coles County State’s Attorney’s Office. After a thorough investigation, ISP will submit the case to the Coles County State’s Attorney’s Office for review. The investigation is active and ongoing, and no additional information is available at this time.
