ILLINOIS STATE POLICE RELEASES VIDEO OF CUSTODY INCIDENT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 13, 2026

DECATUR – On February 24, 2026, the Decatur Police Department requested the Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation to investigate the death of an individual after being taken into police custody.

At approximately 11:08 p.m. on February 23, 2026, Decatur Police Department officers responded to a residence in the 3500 block of East Corman Street in Decatur for a call to check the welfare of an individual reported to be in distress. After speaking with the individual at length, 39-year-old Ty J. Doolen of Decatur, as well as a person at the residence who said they did not feel safe and Doolen needed to go to the hospital, officers determined Doolen needed mental health and medical attention. Officers attempted to place Doolen in custody to be taken to the hospital, but Doolen resisted officers and officers used force to bring him under control. Doolen started showing signs of respiratory distress and medical personnel began providing aid. Doolen was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

In accordance with ISP’s commitment to integrity and public transparency, the video of the event is being made available to the public and can be found by clicking HERE.

This video is being released only after consultation with the Macon County State’s Attorney’s Office. ISP provided Doolen’s family the opportunity to review the video before its release to the public.

After a thorough investigation, ISP will turn the case over to the Macon County State’s Attorney’s Office for its review.
