CHICAGO – In accordance with Illinois State Police’s (ISP) commitment to integrity and public transparency, ISP is releasing video from an officer-involved shooting that occurred on April 15, 2026, at approximately 10:50 p.m. in the 6500 block of South Champlain Avenue in Chicago, IL.

On April 15, 2026, ISP received a call of domestic battery from a passenger in a vehicle on I-57. The woman provided ongoing location updates over the phone and eventually got out of the vehicle in the 6500 block of South Champlain Avenue. When officers responded on scene, they encountered the individual reported to be the perpetrator of the domestic battery, 24-year-old Jalen Carpenter of Markham, IL. While attempting to speak with Carpenter, a struggle ensued, Carpenter pulled a gun from his waistband, and fired it. Officers fired their weapons striking Carpenter. Officers rendered medical aid until Carpenter was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. A firearm was recovered from the scene.

In accordance with the Police and Community Relations Improvement Act (50 ILCS 727) and the Illinois State Police Law (20 ILCS 2605), ISP Division of Internal Investigation Special Agents are investigating this incident. All information and evidence are being provided to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office for its review.

For transparency, a video of the event is being made available to the public and can be found HERE. ISP provided Carpenter’s family the opportunity to review the video before its release to the public.

This investigation is open and ongoing. Upon completion of the investigation, all evidence and facts will be submitted for review to the Cook County State’s Attorney's Office. No additional information is available at this time.
