FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUGUST 31, 2026

GRANITE CITY – The Illinois State Police (ISP) continues to investigate an officer involved shooting in Granite City at the request of the Granite City Police Department (GCPD) and the Madison County Sheriff's Office (MCSO). New information has identified two weapons.

On August 24, 2026, at approximately 10:19 a.m., GCPD and MCSO officers responded to the 2000 block of Edison Avenue in Granite City for the report of an armed suspect, now identified as 40-year-old Ryan N. Cerentano. Upon arrival, officers observed Cerentano armed with a handgun and a long gun, later confirmed to be a replica long gun. Cerentano did not comply with officers’ commands to drop the weapons. Both a GCPD and MCSO officer discharged firearms striking Cerentano, who was transported to an area hospital where he later died of his injuries. No officers were injured.

This investigation is open and ongoing. Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be submitted for review to the Madison County State’s Attorney's Office. No additional information is available at this time.
