ILLINOIS STATE POLICE INVESTIGATION RESULTS IN CHARGES IN CONNECTION WITH JACKSON KRADLE DEATH

MOUNT CARROLL – An Illinois State Police (ISP) investigation has resulted in charges against former Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputy, 44-year-old Matthew Herpstreith of Savanna, Illinois, in connection with the death of 18-year-old Jackson Kradle of Mount Carroll, Illinois.
On July 28, 2024, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office requested ISP Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 2 investigate the death of a man found lying in the middle of Illinois Route 78, later identified as Kradle, just north of Mount Carroll around 3:30 a.m. Kradle was pronounced deceased on scene.
Today, the Office of the State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor charged Herpstreith with one count of Reckless Homicide (Class 3), one count of Reckless Conduct (Class 4), one count of Obstructing Justice (Class 4), one count of Attempt Obstructing Justice (Class A), and one count of Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident (Petty). Herpstreith received pre-trial release and will appear in court on April 17, 2025. ISP has turned its case over to the Office of the State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor and no additional information is available.

Charges are not evidence against the defendant. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
