ILLINOIS STATE POLICE INVESTIGATING SHOOTING INCIDENT ON I-88

MAPLE PARK – The Illinois State Police (ISP) is investigating a shooting that occurred on April 27, 2026, at approximately 3:12 p.m. on I-88 westbound near Keslinger Road in DeKalb County.
Preliminary information indicates a Naperville Police officer located a vehicle near IL-59 and North Aurora Road wanted in connection with a missing person who was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis. The driver brandished a firearm and then fled in the vehicle. Warrenville Police Department officers located the vehicle and initiated a pursuit as the driver continued to brandish a firearm. The pursuit entered I-88 westbound at which time ISP became involved. As the vehicle entered DeKalb County, spike strips were successfully deployed and the vehicle came to a stop on I-88 westbound near Keslinger Road. Both the driver and a Warrenville Police officer reportedly discharged their firearms during the incident and the driver sustained a gunshot wound. Officers administered life-saving measures on scene before the driver was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. No officers were injured.
In accordance with the Police and Community Relations Improvement Act (50 ILCS 727) and the Illinois State Police Law (20 ILCS 2605), ISP Division of Internal Investigation Special Agents are investigating ISP’s involvement in this incident. The ISP Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 1 is investigating the Warrenville Police officer’s use of force.
This investigation is open and ongoing. Upon completion of the investigation, all evidence and facts will be submitted for review to the DeKalb County State’s Attorney's Office. No additional information is available at this time.
