ILLINOIS STATE POLICE ARRESTS SUMMERFIELD MAN FOR FIRST DEGREE MURDER AFTER SHOOTING DEATH OF HIS SON

EAST ST. LOUIS – Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 6 Public Safety Enforcement Group (PSEG) Special Agents arrested 49-year-old Anthony L. Powe of Summerfield, IL for First Degree Murder (Class M Felony) and Attempted Murder (Class X Felony).
On April 10, 2026, the East St. Louis Police Department requested ISP’s assistance with a homicide investigation which occurred in the area of 22nd and Market Streets. Officers located a deceased victim in a vehicle with gunshot wounds, now identified as 31-year-old Devonta A. McCray of Belleville, IL. A second victim was located nearby, also suffering from gunshot injuries.
After a thorough investigation, Special Agents identified Powe as the suspect. Powe is McCray’s father. On April 11, 2026, PSEG presented the case to St. Clair County State’s Attorney James Gomric, and the above-mentioned charges were filed against Powe. Powe was held at the St. Clair County Jail pending his first court appearance. There is no further information available at this time.
