ILLINOIS STATE POLICE ARRESTS MAN FOR LEAVING THE SCENE OF SERIOUS INJURY CRASH ON I-94

CHICAGO – Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 1 Special Agents arrested 39-year-old Lawrence J. Johnson of Chicago, IL for Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Crash (Class 4 Felony) and Failure to Report a Personal Injury Crash (Class 2 Felony) related to a hit and run crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway this weekend.



On May 23, 2026, at approximately 3:10 a.m., ISP Troopers responded to a personal injury crash on the ramp from I-94 southbound to 95th Street. A pedestrian was standing on the roadway of the ramp when they were struck by the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect fled the scene of the crash. The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.



ISP Special Agents conducted a swift and thorough investigation, identifying Johnson as the driver of the suspect vehicle. ISP Special Agents executed a residential search warrant at Johnson’s residence and took him into custody.



ISP presented its case to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the above-mentioned charges were filed. Johnson is being held at the Cook County Jail pending his first court appearance. There is no further information available at this time.

The charges are not evidence against the defendant, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
