Illinois State Police Arrests Fairview Heights Man for First-Degree Murder After Shooting Leaves Belleville Man Dead

EAST ST. LOUIS – Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 6 Public Safety Enforcement Group (PSEG) Special Agents arrested 21-year-old Evan M. Spencer of Fairview Heights, IL for First Degree Murder (Class M Felony).
On August 2, 2026, at approximately 5:21 a.m., East St. Louis Police Department (ESLPD) responded to the intersection of 24th Street and Missouri Avenue for the report of an injured person. The victim, 28-year-old Demonta L. Hunter of Belleville, IL, had been shot multiple times inside of a vehicle and pushed out onto the roadway. ISP Special Agents arrived on scene and furthered the investigation.
With assistance from Sauget Police Department, Cahokia Heights Police Department, and ESLPD, ISP Special Agents identified and arrested the suspect, Evan Spencer. On August 3, 2026, the case was presented to St. Clair County State’s Attorney James Gomric, and the above-mentioned charge was filed. Spencer was in custody during the issuance of charges. No further information is available.
