ILLINOIS STATE POLICE ARRESTS EAST ST. LOUIS MAN FOR FIRST DEGREE MURDER AFTER WOMAN FOUND DECEASED IN HER APARTMENT

EAST ST. LOUIS – Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation Public Safety Enforcement Group officers arrested 42-year-old Jamal L. Wilson of East St. Louis, IL for First Degree Murder (Class M Felony) stemming from a fatal stabbing within the last week.

On September 27, 2025, ISP Special Agents were requested by the East St. Louis Police Department (ESLPD) to assist with a homicide investigation that occurred at an apartment in the 3200 block of State Street. The victim, 38-year-old Shanika S. Barbee of East St. Louis, IL, was stabbed inside her residence. She was pronounced deceased on scene by EMS upon their arrival.

After a thorough investigation, ISP and ESLPD officers identified Wilson as the suspect. ​ ISP Special Agents presented the case to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office and on September 29, 2025, the above-mentioned charge was filed. Wilson is currently being held pending the issuance of charges. No further information is available.

The charge is not evidence against the defendant, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
