CHICAGO – Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 1 Special Agents arrested 27-year-old James G. Sims of Chicago, IL for one count of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 1 Felony) related to a road rage expressway shooting nearly a year ago.
On October 2, 2024, ISP troopers responded to an expressway shooting and crash on I-55 northbound near Kedzie Avenue. A road rage incident occurred, and an occupant from a Ford reportedly fired a weapon at the driver of an Audi. The Audi driver suffered multiple gunshot wounds and subsequently crashed into a light pole. They were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Troopers located the abandoned Ford just north of where the incident occurred; it had been reported stolen prior to the shooting.
After an extensive investigation, ISP Special Agents identified Sims as a suspect from the stolen Ford. On October 9, 2025, Special Agents located Sims and took him into custody without incident.
On October 10, 2025, ISP Special Agents presented their case to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and the above-mentioned charge was filed. Sims was held pending his first court hearing. There is no further information available at this time.
The charge is not evidence against the defendant, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
