Illinois State Police Arrests Chicago Heights Man After Expressway Shooting

SOUTH HOLLAND – Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 1 Special Agents arrested 53-year-old Forrest McHerron of Chicago Heights, IL, following a traffic crash and shooting.

On September 17, 2026, ISP Troop 3 units responded to a traffic crash and reported shooting on I-94 southbound at 159th Street in South Holland. A vehicle involved in the crash did not stop and continued southbound with the driver, McHerron, shooting from his vehicle. Multiple vehicles were struck by gunfire and one of the victims returned fire striking McHerron. McHerron continued driving into Indiana and was stopped by the Hammond Indiana Police Department. McHerron was taken to an area hospital for his injuries and remained in ISP custody. The victim that returned fire was not injured or charged.

On September 19, 2026, ISP presented the case to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, which approved two counts of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 1 Felony) and one count of Aggravated Unlawful Possession of a Firearm (Class 3 Felony). McHerron appeared at a pre-trial detention hearing and was denied release. There is no further information.

The charges are not evidence against the defendant, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
