ILLINOIS STATE POLICE ARREST PLEASANT PLAINS MAN FOR LEAVING THE SCENE OF A FATAL PEDESTRIAN CRASH ON INTERSTATE 72

NEW BERLIN – Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation Major Crimes officers arrested 65-year-old Robert W. Butcher of Pleasant Plains, IL for Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Traffic Crash (Class 1 Felony).

On March 22, 2025, an officer from the New Berlin Police Department located a female pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle on Interstate 72 near milepost 82.5 in New Berlin. ISP officers arrived on scene and initiated their investigation. The pedestrian, 35-year-old Maysa Davis of New Berlin, IL, was transported to an area hospital and declared deceased. The offending vehicle that struck Davis left the scene before officers arrived. After an extensive investigation, ISP special agents identified Butcher as the driver of the offending vehicle.

On March 24, 2025, ISP officers arrested Butcher and he was transported to the Sangamon County Jail. ​ The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information.

The charge is not evidence against the defendant, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
